Cannot log in to Outlook or your Telia email? Try this

Outlook is Microsoft's email, previously known as Hotmail and Live. Telia mail is the address ending in telia.com that comes with a Telia broadband subscription in Sweden. The two work differently, so start by seeing which one your address belongs to.

Always type the password yourself. Never give it to anyone and never put it in a chat message. Microsoft, Telia, your bank and Solvora will never ask for your password, your BankID code or a verification code, and you should never approve a BankID signing that you did not just start yourself.

Outlook

  1. Go to outlook.com in a browser, or open the Outlook app.
  2. Type your full address, for example name@hotmail.com or name@outlook.com, and tap Next.
  3. Type the password yourself. You may be asked to confirm with a code in the Microsoft Authenticator app or a text message.
  4. If the password is refused, tap Forgot password and follow the instructions. The code goes to the recovery address or number already on the account, so have your phone to hand.
  5. If you get a message about unusual activity, sign in from the device you normally use and from home. Microsoft recognises you more easily that way and lets you in sooner.
  6. If the mail app on your phone asks for the password over and over: remove the account from the app and add it again. Choose the account type Outlook, not Other. Your messages are on the server and come back once the account is added.

Telia mail

  1. Go to telia.se and log in to Mitt Telia, or go straight to the mail through the email link on telia.se.
  2. Logging in to Mitt Telia is done with BankID, or with a username and password. Never open BankID because someone on the phone asks you to.
  3. If you have forgotten the password to the mailbox itself, reset it from inside Mitt Telia under your services, not on the mail page.
  4. To read Telia mail in a mail app you need the IMAP settings, meaning the server addresses the app should use. They are on Telia's own email support page. Never guess them, or the account ends up in a loop of error messages.

If you have an older address ending in comhem.se or bredband.net, note that some of those legacy mail services have been retired over the years. Check on Telia's or Tele2's support pages what applies to your particular ending before troubleshooting further, otherwise you are hunting a fault that does not exist.

If the login just spins in the browser

Try a private window, called an Incognito window in Chrome and Edge and a Private window in Safari. If that works, clear cookies and cache in your normal browser. Cookies are small files that sites save to remember you, and stale ones are a common reason a login loads forever. Otherwise try a different browser or a different device.

One thing that saves trouble later

Do not use the email address from your broadband provider as the recovery address for your bank, the authorities or online shops. Change provider and the address is gone, and with it the way back into those accounts. An independent address at Gmail or Outlook follows you whoever delivers internet to your home.

If a reset still does not get you in, if the account is locked, or if you want to move mail from an old provider address to a new one, ask us in the chat. Moving email is easy to get wrong and hard to redo.

Common questions

My mail app keeps asking for the password. Why?

The account in the app has lost its connection to the service, and typing the password again will not fix it. Remove the account from the mail app and add it back, choosing the right account type, which is Outlook for an Outlook address. Your messages stay on the server the whole time.

Are Hotmail and Outlook the same account?

Yes. Microsoft renamed the service over the years, from Hotmail to Live to Outlook, but the old addresses still work and belong to the same account. You sign in at outlook.com whichever ending your address has.

What happens to my Telia email if I change broadband provider?

The address belongs to the subscription and disappears when it ends. Get an independent address such as Gmail or Outlook, and change your address with your bank, the authorities and any shops before you cancel the subscription.
