Wi-Fi is slow or does not reach the whole home

When the internet works but feels sluggish in certain rooms, it almost always comes down to two things: where the router sits, and which frequency your device settled on. Start by measuring, so you know whether the wireless network is the bottleneck or the broadband you pay for. The measurement takes two minutes.

The router is the box with lights that gives you internet. It usually broadcasts on two frequencies at once: 2.4 GHz, which travels far but is slow, and 5 GHz, which is fast over shorter distances. That is why many homes have two network names, one of them ending in 5G or 5GHz.

Try this first

  1. Measure with a cable. Connect a computer straight into the router with a network cable, open bredbandskollen.se and note the number. Compare it with what your subscription promises. If it is already low here, the answer sits with your provider rather than with Wi-Fi.
  2. Then measure on your phone, room by room. Walk around the home with bredbandskollen.se and write down each result. Now you can see exactly where the coverage runs out.
  3. Move the router. It should stand in the open, roughly in the middle of the home, ideally a metre above the floor. Not in a cupboard, not behind the TV, not down by the skirting board and not next to the microwave.
  4. Restart the router by unplugging the power for two minutes. Wait for the lights to be steady again before you measure once more.
  5. Join the 5 GHz network when you are sitting near the router. If you only have one network name, the router makes that choice for you automatically.

If that did not help

  1. Run a cable to anything that stays put. TVs, game consoles and desktop computers do well on a network cable, and it frees up Wi-Fi for phones and tablets.
  2. Count the devices. A home with two people often has fifteen things connected, from speakers to a robot vacuum. Turn off Wi-Fi on whatever lives in a drawer.
  3. Update the router's software. Telia and Tele2 usually handle this themselves, and you can check in the Mitt Telia and Mitt Tele2 apps. Bahnhof and Telenor have equivalent pages once you sign in to your account.
  4. If the router is more than five years old, ask your provider for a newer one. A modern router is often already included in the subscription at no extra cost.
  5. If the signal still does not reach, add a mesh system or an extra access point. Two or three units sharing one network name give even coverage, and your phone moves between them without you noticing.

When the walls are the reason

Concrete, tiling, underfloor heating and large mirrors weaken a wireless signal a great deal, and in a two-storey house it often runs out on the stairs. The measurements show it clearly: full speed in one room and almost nothing in the next, even though the distance is short. No setting in the router changes that. What helps is a second unit on the other side of the wall, ideally reached by a cable of its own.

What is the difference between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz?

They are two frequencies the router broadcasts on. 2.4 GHz travels further and through more walls but is slower. 5 GHz is much faster over shorter distances. Close to the router you gain from 5 GHz, further away from 2.4 GHz.

Is a cheap Wi-Fi extender enough?

A simple repeater rebroadcasts the signal and often halves the speed doing it. A mesh system, or an extra access point from your provider, shares one network name and keeps the speed. Measure first, buy afterwards.

How fast does my internet actually need to be?

For streaming, video calls and browsing, 100 Mbit/s is plenty for most households. Higher numbers start to matter only when several people download large files at the same time.

Why is it fast on my phone and slow on my computer?

The computer is often further away, or stuck on 2.4 GHz while the phone picked 5 GHz. Move the computer closer for a moment and measure again, or connect it with a network cable if it stays in one place anyway.
