Mobile BankID is not working? How to get it going
BankID is the digital ID that almost every Swedish bank, authority and payment service uses to confirm who you are, and mobile BankID is the app version on your phone or tablet. When it stops working it is nearly always one of three things: the app needs updating, your BankID is not on this particular device, or the phone has no internet right now. Most people are back up and running within ten minutes.
One thing to know before you start: nobody legitimate ever asks for your BankID code. Your bank, BankID, Google, Apple and Solvora will never ask for a password, a BankID code or a verification code. Never approve a BankID signing that you did not just start yourself, and never open BankID because someone on the phone asks you to.
Try this first
- Check that the phone has internet. Open any web page and see that it loads. If it does not, internet is the thing to fix first, not BankID.
- Turn airplane mode on, wait ten seconds, and turn it off again. The symbol is in the menu you pull down from the edge of the screen. The phone then reconnects to the network from scratch.
- Check that the phone has the right time. On iPhone: Settings, General, Date and Time, turn on Set Automatically. On Android: Settings, System, Date and time, turn on automatic time. A clock that is off by a minute is enough for BankID to refuse.
- Update the BankID app. On iPhone in the App Store, on Android in Google Play. Search for BankID. If the button says Update, tap it. If it says Open, the app is already current.
- Restart the phone. Hold the power button until the screen shows you how to switch off, switch off, wait half a minute, and turn it back on.
- Open the BankID app. If you see your name and personal number in the list, your BankID is still on this phone. Type your security code yourself and check that the app lets you in.
If that did not help
- If the app says your BankID is blocked or expired, you need a new one. That comes from your bank, not from BankID and not from us.
- If you have changed phone, your BankID did not come with you. That is deliberate, for security. You need a new one issued to the new phone.
- If your security code is refused every time and you are sure it is correct, your BankID has most likely been blocked after too many attempts. Your bank unblocks it.
- As a last step you can delete the BankID app and install it again. Your BankID disappears from the phone when you do, and has to be ordered from the bank again, so leave this until everything else has been tried.
How to get a new BankID
A new mobile BankID is always issued by your own bank. There are two usual routes, and both require the bank to be able to confirm it is you:
- In your bank app or online bank, if you can still identify yourself there. If you have a working BankID on another device, or a card reader or security token from the bank, you can normally order a new BankID straight away.
- At a bank branch, with valid photo ID. If you have no way to identify yourself digitally, this is the route that remains. Call the bank first and ask whether you need an appointment.
Either way you receive an activation code. Type it into the BankID app yourself. Never read it out to anyone, not even to someone who says they are calling from your bank.
If you cannot get into your online bank to order one, or you are unsure which route applies to your bank, ask us in the chat before you start. We will walk through it with you, and your codes stay yours alone.
