Why does the keyboard change language by itself?

The Windows key plus space switches language, and it is easy to press by accident. With several languages installed the computer keeps flipping between them. Remove the languages you do not use and it stops.

Where are the apostrophe and the slash on a Swedish keyboard?

The apostrophe sits on the key to the right of Ä. The slash comes from Shift and 7. If your computer behaves differently, the layout is still set to English.

One single key does nothing, is that also the language?

No. If one key gives nothing while the rest type correctly, the key itself is the issue. Try another keyboard over USB. If that one works, the built-in keyboard is what needs attention.

Can I still type my password?

Wait until the characters are right. Typing a password with the wrong layout produces different characters than you expect, and a few attempts can lock the account. Switch the language first, then type.

Keyboard typing the wrong characters? How to switch back

If a key produces a different character than the one printed on it, or Swedish å, ä and ö do not appear at all, the keyboard layout is set to the wrong language. The keyboard is fine; the computer is simply reading the keys as an English or US keyboard. Switching takes ten seconds once you know where it lives.

Layout means which letter the computer believes each key carries. The Swedish layout has å, ä and ö to the right of the letters, and an English layout puts other characters in those places.

Try this first

Look at the bottom right of the Windows taskbar, next to the clock. It shows SWE or ENG.
Click that abbreviation and choose Swedish from the list. Type a line and check that å, ä and ö come out.
The quickest route is the Windows key and space together. Press until SWE shows.
On a Mac: look in the menu bar at the top for a flag or a letter code, click it and choose Swedish. The shortcut is Control and space.
Test in an empty document before going back to what you were doing, so you know the characters land correctly.

If that did not help

If Swedish is missing from the Windows list: Settings > Time and language > Language and region > Add a language, and choose Swedish.
Remove the language you do not use. Click the three dots next to it and choose Remove. Always keep at least one language installed.
If several keyboards sit under Swedish, click the three dots next to Swedish > Language options and remove the layouts you do not use. The computer then stops switching between them.
If Swedish is missing on a Mac: System Settings > Keyboard > Text Input > Edit, press the plus button and add Swedish. Also tick the option to show the input menu in the menu bar, so you can always see which language is active.
If individual keys give nothing at all, this is not the layout. Try another keyboard over USB. If that one types correctly, the built-in keyboard needs attention, particularly if liquid has been spilled on it.

On phones and tablets

The on-screen keyboard has its own language setting. Tap the globe or flag at the bottom left of the keyboard to move between the languages you have added. On iPhone you add Swedish under Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards > Add New Keyboard. On Android the same setting lives under Settings > General management > Keyboard list and default, or under Language and input depending on the model.

A common situation is that the phone itself types correctly while a keyboard connected over Bluetooth or USB types the wrong characters. An external keyboard has its own layout, set separately. On iPhone and iPad it sits under Settings > General > Keyboard > Hardware Keyboard, where you choose Swedish. On Android the same choice appears in the keyboard settings once the physical keyboard is connected.
